Typical Festivities in Andorra: A Unique Cultural Experience

Andorra, with its rich history and traditions, offers visitors a variety of festivities that reflect the identity and spirit of its inhabitants. At Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa, we invite you to immerse yourself in these celebrations that fill every corner of the Principality with life. Here are some of Andorra's most notable festivities that you can't miss during your stay with us.

Popular Escudellas: Warmth in the Cold Months

The popular escudellas are a deeply rooted tradition in Andorra. They are celebrated in various parishes such as Canillo, Encamp, La Massana, Andorra la Vella, and Escaldes-Engordany on January 17th in honor of Saint Anthony, and in Sant Julià de Lòria on January 20th for Saint Sebastian. This festival is characterized by the preparation and distribution of a thick broth with meat and vegetables, known as "escudella," which brings the community together in an atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie.

Summer Solstice Festivals: Fire and Joy

The summer solstice is celebrated with the festivals of Saint John and Saint Peter, where "fallas" (torches made of bark) light up the night as they are thrown and spun by participants. These festivities, recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, are a unique opportunity to enjoy the tradition and joy of the Andorran summer.

Major Festival of Canillo: Tradition and Competition

The parish of Canillo celebrates its Major Festival on the third Sunday of July, extending from Saturday to Monday. Additionally, on the last Sunday of July, the International Sheepdog Competition takes place, an event that attracts many visitors and showcases the herding skills of the dogs in the beautiful setting of the Planells de Mereig.

Encamp and El Pas de la Casa: Vibrant Celebrations

Encamp hosts several festivities throughout the year, highlighting the Town Festival in June and its Major Festival in August. However, the Encamp Carnival is one of the liveliest events, featuring the famous "Ball de l’Ossa" performance, a tradition recognized by UNESCO. In El Pas de la Casa, the Major Festival is celebrated on June 29th, coinciding with Saint John.

Ordino: Tradition and Culture

Ordino is known for its Roser festival, which takes place on the first Sunday of July and extends over four days full of traditional and modern activities. The parish also celebrates its Major Festival on September 16th and has revived the performance of "L'última Ossa" in December, part of the "Bear Festivals of the Pyrenees."

La Massana: Music and Community

La Massana celebrates its patron saint, Saint Anthony, on January 17th with popular escudellas. The Roser festival, around the second Sunday of July, is the most prominent, with three days of music, activities, and the distribution of roses among neighbors. Its Major Festival is celebrated on August 15th and 16th, bringing the community together in a vibrant celebration.

Andorra la Vella: Capital of Celebrations

The capital, Andorra la Vella, celebrates its Town Festival on June 24th and its Major Festival on the first Saturday of August, extending several days before and after. These festivities are among the most attended in the Principality, with events that attract visitors from all over. Santa Coloma, a parish of the capital, celebrates its Major Festival on the penultimate weekend of August.

Sant Julià de Lòria: Devotion and Youth

Sant Julià de Lòria celebrates the Canòlich festival on the last Saturday of May, with a pilgrimage to the sanctuary. Its Major Festival at the end of July is known for its live music evenings and daytime activities for the whole family. Additionally, performances of "Els Pastorets," adaptations of the traditional text by Folch and Torres, are an integral part of the Christmas festivities.

Escaldes-Engordany: Culture and Participation

Escaldes-Engordany celebrates its parish festival on the Sunday following June 14th, with traditional activities and the "Pessebre vivent" at Christmas, involving locals and entities in performances throughout the old neighborhood of Engordany.
